Medical Device

Over five billion debt owed by local health authorities and hospitals in relation to biomedical companies, companies that provide electro-medical equipment, diagnostic instruments, syringes, gauze and bandages. The outstanding claims are mainly concentrated in four regions: Campania, Lazio, Piedmont and Calabria, is what emerges from the updated estimate to 31 January 2013 by Assobiomedica , the Association brings together nearly 300 technology companies and biomedical diagnostics.

Among the debts of local health authorities there are not only those against biomedical companies, but there are other expenses to consider, such as those against companies that offer a range of services to hospitals, such as laundry, cleaning, canteen management, maintenance , waste management and medication. Equally eloquent analysis on medicinal products for Farmindustria : the total amount of credits in the pharmaceutical industry against the public administration, 31 December 2012, amounted to about 4 billion. Claims against the regions subjected to plans to cut spending amounted to about 60% of the total. About 76% of loans is reported in regions that have time payments exceeding 200 days. Molise, Calabria, Lazio (293), California (271) and Piedmont (253) are the regions where you experience the greatest delays in payments.

The total debt of the NHS in relation to suppliers is 40 billion euro, according to the Court of Auditors , including drugs, goods and services.

Patents

Avoid patent brokers like the plague. Most just send out batches of ideas indiscriminately to companies who just drop the batches into wastebaskets. Month ago, the Costco Connection magazine has a letter to one of their advisors. He invested nearly ten grand, cannot even get return phone calls.
Less than 5% of ideas make it to production, and only 10% of those return a profit.
The prolific inventor Lamelson with 500 patents, spent half his life in court defending his patents and suing others for patent infringement.

I am interested in learning more about the approval process for drugs and medical devices in Canada vs the USA. New and emerging companies would benefit from this.

    • In Canada, everything has to go through a rigorous testing process before it can be released to the public, but you can get generic versions of drugs much sooner than in the USA; I think it s twenty years after proprietary version is released.

  • Avatar KC_Meag42 What market structure would you think Johnson & Johnson is?
    Oct 28, 2007 by KC_Meag42 | Posted in Economics

The company as a whole has three divisions: consumer, pharmaceutical, and medical devices/diagnostics. They do have competition from pfizer, merck, Ellie Lily, Proctor & Gamble, etc. But when you throw in the patents, this creates a monopoly effect. They have patents on these particular products, but generics and those of competitors also have patents, or find ways to go around the patents. So would you say that Johnson & Johnson is a monopoly, oligopoly, or a monopolistic competition? Or is it possible to be showing multiple markets, divided by each facet? Like the company itself …

    • Oligopolist. This is because they have more than two major competitors (so they can t be a monopoly or duopoly) and there is an incredible amount of product differentiation. If you look at the prices of J&J products and compare them with competitors products you can conclude that they aren t mainly competing through price, but most through product differentiation. There is a massive amount of advertising from J&J. J&J is a huge conglomerate with many divisions, but all the divisions I know of J&J is a oligopolist. Note that I have seen some price competition and …
